We have been researching and experimenting with off the shelf scaled lighting equipment for about 3 years now and here are our suggestions for different applications.

Cyd Knight at Barbizon in Charlotte NC can give you current price quotes on all packages. She helped us develop the systems.  Give her a call at—704 372-2122

System 1         Rough Pricing— Under $1000

I am a set designer and I want to light my models so I can photograph them and send the shots to the director. I do not have a lot of money so I want the minimum investment possible.

6—Par 20 (Birdies) 100 watt MFL

2—3” Fresnels (inkies) 100 watts

4-way Barn doors for Birdies and Inkies

1-Mini Ellipse 75 watts (For adding patterns)

1– Pattern Holder for Mini Ellipse

Lamps for all units (Don’t forget a couple of spares)

2-Plugging Strips

1-25’ 14 Gauge Cable (May change depending on where your outlets are located.) If you plugged in every unit listed above you would have only 950 watts, so you only need one standard outlet to power the entire lab.

1-Designer Swatch Book (your favorite brand)

No dimming Capability (just plug them into the plugging strips)

System 2       Rough Pricing— Under $3000

System 4       Rough Pricing— Under $20000

I teach lighting design and I have the money to spent to make it the best equipped lighting lab in the country. I can add even more gear when more money is available next fiscal year.

24—Par 20 (Birdies) 100 watt MFL

6-Mini Ellipse 75 watts (For adding patterns)

6-Chauvet LED Color Mixing PARs

2–Chauvet Profile Moving Lights

2–Chauvet Wash Moving Lights

We are still looking for a really good and small linear cyc wash unit. We have tested Color Kinetics icove units and they worked pretty well. Pixel Range is working on a very cool color mixing LED strip type fixture that is really small and could be quite wonderful.  We hope to try one out soon.  Either way you should have a top and bottom cyc wash system.

20-5’ 14 Gauge Cable

16 –10’ DMX Control Cables

2 –25’ DMX Control Cables

Microclamps—1 for each lighting unit.

4-way Barn doors for Birdies and Inkies

Lamps for all units (Don’t forget a couple of spares)

Pattern Holders for Mini ellipses

6-Dimmer packs—American DJ Pro Bars (This would give you 12 dimmers)

1-ETC Element (or the computer console of your choice)

8-Designer Swatch Books (2 each of the major 4 brands)

You will need 6 separate 20 amp outlets. (One for each Dimmer pack.)

For gel, we suggest buying the designer size swatch books of color and cutting them up. They seem pricey at first, but it is a quick way to have every color out there available without spending A LOT of money buying a sheet of everything from each company
